Focus on Strengthening Medical Institutions
Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Monday reiterated the state government’s commitment to upgrading healthcare infrastructure and expressed a strong ambition to elevate Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) into the list of top 10 medical institutions in the country. He emphasised that enhancing doctors’ confidence and skill development will be central to this mission.
Foundation Stones Laid for Major Projects
Dr Saha made these remarks after laying the foundation stone for several significant infrastructure projects at AGMC and GBP Hospital. These initiatives, he said, mark a crucial step toward strengthening the state’s healthcare system.
Critical Care, Disease Centres, and New Wards Inaugurated
According to ANI, the inaugurated projects include the Critical Care Building (CCB), the Communicable Disease Centre (CDC), a 20-bed special ward at GBP Hospital, and the Inter-Departmental Call Management System (IDCMS). These facilities aim to improve emergency care, infectious disease management, and hospital coordination.
Crackdown on Hospital Middlemen
Addressing concerns over unethical practices, the Chief Minister highlighted the presence of brokers inside GB and TMC Hospitals who attempt to divert patients to private facilities outside the state. He confirmed that steps are being taken to identify and stop such activities.
Advancements in Surgical Capabilities
Providing an update on the state’s medical achievements, Dr Saha noted that eight hip replacement surgeries and several knee replacements have already been successfully conducted in Tripura. He added that a wide range of advanced treatments is now being offered at AGMC Hospital, with plans for further upgrades to expand medical services.
Super Speciality Services Expand at AGMC
The Chief Minister shared that nine super specialities have been launched at AGMC at a cost of approximately ₹250 crore. Four additional services are in the pipeline. He recently met the Union Health Minister to request further financial allocation for infrastructure development, receiving assurance that the Centre will support the purchase of equipment and medical tools.
Push for Excellence Among Doctors
Dr Saha urged doctors to enhance their skills and contribute to elevating AGMC’s national standing. Achieving top-tier status, he stressed, will require collective effort, not just government intervention.
Major Funding for Maternal, Child, and Dental Infrastructure
Highlighting additional developments, the Chief Minister announced that a dedicated mother-and-child block is being established at AGMC and GB Hospital with funding of ₹192 crore from the DoNER Ministry. Another ₹202 crore has been allocated for the infrastructure expansion of the Dental College, marking a significant step in strengthening Tripura’s overall medical education ecosystem.
