Thane: An orthopaedic surgeon from Ambernath has been booked for allegedly sexually exploiting a widow under the pretext of marriage. The woman, whose husband had earlier been treated by the doctor, accused him of taking advantage of her following her husband’s death.

According to the police, the complainant alleged that the doctor approached her with a promise of marriage and gradually developed a physical relationship with her. She claimed she trusted his intentions and entered into a relationship, unaware that he had no plans to fulfil his promise, The Times of India reported.

The situation escalated when the woman realised she had been deceived. Feeling cheated, she approached the police and filed a complaint against the doctor, accusing him of sexual assault and betrayal.

Based on her statement, police registered a case under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The accused has not been taken into custody yet, and an investigation into the allegations is underway.

Officials said the woman has provided detailed statements and evidence to support her claim, while the police are verifying communication records between the two.

The incident adds to a series of recent cases involving alleged sexual misconduct by medical professionals. Earlier, a gynaecologist from Banihal in Jammu and Kashmir was arrested after a female patient accused him of inappropriate behaviour, sparking public outrage in the region.

Authorities said necessary legal action will be taken once the probe confirms the extent of the doctor’s involvement in the alleged offence.
