The Maharashtra public health department has lifted the suspension on live liver transplant surgeries at Sahyadri Super Speciality Hospitals, Deccan Gymkhana, after a detailed inquiry found no evidence of medical negligence in the deaths of a donor–recipient couple earlier this year. The hospital can now resume transplant procedures as per regulatory norms.
State Committee Clears Hospital of Negligence
A 16-member state advisory committee, headed by the public health department secretary, reviewed the case on November 6 at Mantralaya, Mumbai. The panel examined the findings of an earlier eight-member expert committee led by renowned transplant surgeon Dr Mohammed Rela, president of the International Liver Transplant Society, which found no procedural lapses.
Background of the Case
The case centred around a 48-year-old patient who underwent a live liver transplant on August 15, with his wife serving as the donor. The patient’s condition deteriorated immediately post-surgery, resulting in his death the same day. His wife developed severe complications and died a week later on August 22, prompting a suo motu investigation by the state.
Initial Actions Taken by Health Department
Following the tragic incident, the state government temporarily suspended the hospital’s live liver transplant licence on August 26. A high-level committee was formed to examine allegations of medical negligence and evaluate all stages of the surgical and post-operative processes.
No Procedural Errors Found in Inquiry
According to Dr Bhagwan Pawar, deputy director of health services and member secretary of the committee, the probe found no evidence of errors in surgical procedure or post-operative care. The panel reviewed medical records, surgical notes, and management protocols, ultimately concluding that the deaths were not caused by negligence.
Health Department Issues Revival Order
Dr Pawar confirmed that the Director of Health Services, Mumbai, issued a letter on November 27 instructing authorities to revoke the suspension. He stated that the licence has been restored with immediate effect under the provisions of the Human Organ Transplantation Act, 1994.
Police Investigation Still Underway
Despite the administrative decision, the police probe into the incident continues. Senior Inspector Girisha Nimbalkar told TOI that a request has been made to JJ Hospital, Mumbai, for expert review, and the police are awaiting their report. The investigation aims to ensure clarity on any non-medical concerns or external factors.
Family Awaits Postmortem Report
Meanwhile, the family of the deceased donor continues to wait for the postmortem findings, which may provide additional insight into the medical complications that followed the surgery. The case remains sensitive, even as the hospital prepares to resume transplant procedures.
