PRAYAGRAJ, INDIA — A severe confrontation between advocates and resident physicians at Swaroop Rani Nehru (SRN) Hospital has triggered widespread healthcare disruptions, highlighting ongoing vulnerabilities in workplace safety for medical professionals in India. The altercation, which erupted in the early hours of Wednesday, escalated into a massive standoff between two of the city’s most prominent professional communities. This clash forced emergency and outpatient services to a grinding halt and prompted a high-stakes administrative inquiry.

Genesis of the Dispute

According to details released by Dr V.K. Pandey, Principal of Motilal Nehru Medical College (MLNMC), under which SRN Hospital operates, the incident began around 6:00 AM. A female advocate, Jagriti Shukla, was rushed to the emergency ward by four to five fellow lawyers after sustaining injuries in a road accident.

Tensions flared when duty doctors advised that only one attendant stay with the patient to avoid crowding the critical care area. Aggrieved by this protocol, the accompanying lawyers grew agitated, leading to a heated verbal dispute regarding the speed and manner of treatment.

Escalation and Allegations of Violence

The situation deteriorated rapidly from a verbal spat into a physical altercation. Hospital authorities state that irate advocates began vandalising medical equipment and broke a glass panel within the hospital premises. Conversely, the advocates alleged that the on-duty junior doctors behaved rudely and assaulted them when questioned.

The conflict leaked outside the hospital walls into the city. Crowds of lawyers gathered to block critical transit points, including the Government Press crossing in Civil Lines, where they vandalised vehicles and clashed with responding police forces, leaving Assistant Commissioner of Police Vidyut Goyal injured.

Cross-complaints have generated significant friction:

  • The Legal Counter-Complaint: An FIR was registered at the Kotwali Police Station against unidentified junior doctors. The complaint, filed by advocate Rasika Aneesh Khan, leviled severe allegations of physical assault with sharp surgical instruments, confinement, and inappropriate conduct toward female advocates.
  • The Medical Fraternity Counter-Claim: Doctors submitted a formal written complaint asserting that the advocates initiated the ruckus, filmed unauthorized videos inside restricted clinical zones, and physically threatened medical personnel.

Impact on Clinical Services and Institutional Response

The immediate fallout was catastrophic for regional healthcare delivery. Junior doctors withdrew from their duties, entirely paralyzing Outpatient Department (OPD) and elective services. While hospital management briefly restored emergency operations on Wednesday afternoon, the subsequent filing of the police FIR against the resident doctors incensed the medical fraternity anew. Doctors launched sustained sit-ins and protests, refusing to fully resume clinical workflows until they receive guarantees of strict physical protection, healthy working conditions, and a quashing of the police complaints.

To address the immediate administrative crisis, Dr V.K. Pandey formed a high-level three-member internal inquiry committee. The panel is led by Vice-Principal Dr Mohit Jain, alongside senior faculty members Dr Dilip Chaurasia (Department of Urology) and Dr Sanjay Singh (Department of Surgery). The committee is reviewing CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts to compile a definitive factual report.

A Systemic Challenge for Indian Doctors

For the broader medical community across India, the events at SRN Hospital underscore a persistent, dangerous trend of workplace violence. Medical professionals frequently operate under intense structural deficits, facing overcrowded wards and overstretched resources, which compounds friction with patient attendants. When specialized professional groups use collective pressure against medical staff, it exposes the profound vulnerability of resident doctors on the front lines of emergency care.
