Family alleges hospital staff failed to provide timely medical attention despite high-risk pregnancy; newborn admitted to NICU in critical condition
A shocking incident at the District Hospital in Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh, has sparked allegations of medical negligence after a pregnant woman reportedly delivered a premature baby at the hospital’s main gate late on Thursday night. The newborn was shifted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in critical condition, while the hospital administration has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
According to the woman’s family, Sukhvati Bai, a resident of Sahastabad village in Sironj tehsil, was referred from Sironj Hospital and admitted to Vidisha District Hospital at around 1 p.m. She was seven months pregnant and suffering from vaginal bleeding and high blood pressure, requiring urgent medical attention.
Family members alleged that after admission, she was given medicines and intravenous fluids but was not adequately monitored despite her high-risk condition. They further claimed that hospital staff asked attendants to leave the ward and failed to keep the family informed about her medical status.
Around 9:40 p.m., Sukhvati Bai reportedly experienced severe labour pain. While her family was taking her outside the ward, she delivered the premature baby at the hospital’s main entrance.
The family alleged that no doctor, nurse, or midwife immediately responded after the delivery, leaving the newborn unattended for several minutes before the infant was shifted to the NICU for emergency treatment.
The incident triggered protests by the patient’s relatives and others present at the hospital. Kotwali Police Station SHO Anand Raj reached the hospital after receiving information about the incident and said further legal action would be taken if a formal complaint is received.
District Hospital Civil Surgeon Dr. Anoop Verma confirmed that an inquiry has been ordered. He stated that strict action would be taken against any doctor, nurse, or staff member if negligence is established.
Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar also criticised the incident, calling it a serious failure of the state’s public healthcare system and demanding strict action against those responsible.
