New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday directed authorities to conduct a special counselling round to fill vacant medical seats, emphasizing the importance of not wasting these opportunities amid the country’s ongoing shortage of doctors.

Last Chance to Fill Vacant Seats

A bench of Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan instructed the admission authorities to complete the counselling and admission process by December 30, 2024. The court highlighted that medical seats should not remain vacant given the critical shortage of doctors in the country.

No Direct Admissions Allowed

The bench also clarified that no college would be allowed to admit students directly, and all admissions must be made through state admission authorities. However, it ensured that this special round would not affect the already finalized admissions, with seats being filled only from the waitlisted candidates.

This directive comes after five rounds of counselling had already been conducted, with the remaining vacant seats being addressed through the special round.
