Ranchi: The Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Jharkhand’s largest government hospital, is conducting a three-day special competency training programme for trainers, aimed at ensuring safe childbirth. The programme is organized by the Maternal Health Division of the National Health Mission (NHM).

Participation from Across Districts

Specialist doctors and staff nurses from labour rooms across various districts are attending the second batch of the training. The sessions focus on hands-on experience to equip participants with essential skills for managing childbirth and addressing challenges during delivery.

Emphasis on Maternal and Infant Health

Dr Amita Bharti, Head of the Gynaecology Department at RIMS, highlighted Jharkhand’s improving maternal and infant health indicators. While the national maternal mortality rate stands at 97, Jharkhand records 54, and the state’s infant mortality rate is 25 compared to the national 28. The training aims to further reduce these numbers to single digits.

Focus on Skills and Emergency Response

Dr Lal Majhi, State Programme Officer (IEC), NHM, said the programme empowers healthcare professionals, particularly those in rural and urban labour rooms, with modern techniques and emergency response skills. Topics include neonatal care, management of post-delivery complications, hygiene, infection control, and maternal nutrition.

UNICEF Provides Technical Support

The training is technically supported by UNICEF and is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates. The initiative ensures that trained health workers can provide safe and effective care, securing a healthier future for mothers and children across the state.
