Kolkata: Dr. Santanu Sen, a former Rajya Sabha member and ex-Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader, has been removed from his position as a state-government-nominated member of the West Bengal Medical Council. This decision follows a series of controversies involving Sen, including his outspoken comments on the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August.

Controversial Remarks and Fallout

Dr. Sen’s comments on the RG Kar tragedy were seen as critical of the state healthcare system and created embarrassment for his party. His outspoken stance marked a shift from party lines, leading to his label as a “rebel” within the political and medical community.

Proposal for Removal

In September, Trinamool legislator and Council President Dr. Sudipto Roy formally proposed Sen’s removal to the Health & Family Welfare Department. Dr. Roy cited Sen’s absence from six consecutive council meetings since January 1, 2024, without valid excuse, as grounds for vacating his position.

Official Decision

On Friday, the Health & Family Welfare Department accepted Dr. Roy’s proposal and announced Dr. Sen’s removal. The state government, however, has not yet announced his replacement, though sources suggest the decision will be finalized by next week.

Underlying Tensions and Central Agency Involvement

A cold war between Dr. Roy and Dr. Sen escalated after the RG Kar tragedy. Matters worsened when the Enforcement Directorate (ED) initiated an investigation into financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College. As part of the probe, ED officials conducted raids and searches at Dr. Roy’s residence and hospital in North Kolkata and later questioned him at their office.

The ongoing tension reflects deeper issues within the healthcare and political landscape of West Bengal, highlighting the aftermath of the RG Kar tragedy and its broader implications.
