Pioneer of Endodontics in Karnataka and India’s First Dentist to Serve as Director of Medical Education Dies in Bengaluru
Veteran endodontist, eminent dental educationist, and former Director of Medical Education (DME) in Karnataka, Dr. N. Rajeeva Shetty, passed away at his residence in Banashankari, Bengaluru, on the night of June 24. He was 93.
Widely regarded as one of the pioneers of modern dentistry in India, Dr. Shetty was the first endodontist in Karnataka and the first dentist in the country to serve as the Director of Medical Education (DME). Throughout his distinguished career spanning several decades, he made remarkable contributions to dental education, clinical research, and healthcare administration.
Dr. Rajeeva Shetty served as the Principal of the Government Dental College and Research Institute, Bengaluru, where he played a pivotal role in strengthening academic standards, promoting research, and advancing excellence in dental education. His commitment to academic integrity and professional excellence earned him immense respect among students, colleagues, and the wider medical fraternity.
Over the years, Dr. Shetty received several prestigious honours in recognition of his outstanding contributions to dentistry and medical education. These included the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award, the Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) degree conferred by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), and the highest honour of the Indian Endodontic Society (IES). He was also awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Pierre Fauchard Academy, USA, acknowledging his significant contributions to the field of dentistry.
Earlier this year, the Indian Endodontic Society (IES) honoured Dr. Shetty with the IES Medal of Honour 2025, the society’s highest recognition, for his pioneering contributions to endodontics in India.
Beyond his administrative and academic achievements, Dr. Shetty was widely admired for his dedication to advancing dental sciences and mentoring generations of dental professionals. His leadership and vision left a lasting impact on dental education and healthcare in the country.
His demise has been deeply mourned by members of the dental and medical fraternity, academicians, former students, and healthcare professionals across India.
According to reports, the funeral will be held at 12:00 noon on June 27 at the Banashankari Crematorium in Bengaluru.
