Indefinite Strike Scheduled for January 20 Over Unfulfilled Promises
Chandigarh: Members of the Punjab Civil Medical Services Association (PCMSA) met with the Health and Finance Ministers, along with other senior officials, on January 8 to discuss their ongoing concerns regarding healthcare issues in the state. Despite the discussions, PCMSA members have refused to call off their planned strike, which is set to begin on January 20.
Unresolved Issues Drive Strike Decision
The meeting included key figures such as Finance Minister Harpal Cheema, Health Minister Balbir Singh, and Principal Secretaries from both Health and Finance Departments. While the government acknowledged the concerns raised by PCMSA, particularly regarding the high attrition rate, low retention, and unsafe working conditions, no immediate resolution was offered.
PCMSA has reiterated its demand for the reinstatement of the Dynamic Assured Career Progression (DACP) scheme, as it was prior to July 2021, a promise made by the government in writing. The association has also expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of progress on the security framework and other commitments.
Next Steps and Strike Plans
The government has informed PCMSA that a framework regarding the calculations will be shared in a meeting on January 10, with a follow-up discussion planned on January 11 at the district level. However, the PCMSA has made it clear that unless their demands are met, the strike, which includes suspension of services across all public healthcare facilities, will proceed as planned from January 20. A further plan of action will be announced at a general body meeting on January 12 in Moga.
