Statewide Alert Issued as Authorities Step Up Prevention Efforts Against Shigella Infection

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Health Department has intensified containment and prevention measures following the detection of fresh Shigella infection cases in different parts of the state. In response to the emerging public health concern, Health Minister K. Muraleedharan has directed local self-government institutions and health officials to strengthen surveillance, sanitation initiatives, and water safety measures to prevent further spread of the disease.

Focus on Safe Drinking Water and Sanitation

As part of the emergency response, the state government has launched urgent interventions to ensure the safety of drinking water sources. Authorities have been instructed to carry out chlorination of water supplies, inspect public wells, and closely monitor potential contamination risks.

Sanitation drives have also been intensified across affected regions, with local bodies directed to ensure timely waste disposal and maintain high standards of public hygiene. Health officials and field teams have been placed on alert to monitor the situation and implement preventive measures at the grassroots level.

Hospitals Directed to Enhance Preparedness

The Health Department has instructed hospitals across the state to remain fully prepared for any potential increase in cases. Medical institutions have been asked to ensure adequate treatment facilities, maintain isolation readiness, and stock essential medicines required for patient management.

Officials stated that the containment strategy is being coordinated jointly by the Health Department and local self-government bodies to ensure a rapid and effective response.

Children Among the Most Vulnerable

Shigella is a bacterial infection primarily transmitted through contaminated food and water. Common symptoms include diarrhoea, fever, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Health experts have warned that children are particularly vulnerable to the infection, making preventive measures in schools, childcare centres, and residential communities especially important.

Public Advised to Follow Hygiene Protocols

The Health Minister has appealed to residents to cooperate fully with containment efforts and strictly adhere to hygiene guidelines. Citizens have been advised to consume only boiled or purified water, wash hands regularly with soap, and maintain proper food hygiene practices.

People experiencing symptoms consistent with Shigella infection have been urged to seek immediate medical attention, as early diagnosis and timely treatment are essential to prevent complications and reduce transmission.

Government Confident of Effective Containment

The Kerala government reiterated that all necessary preventive and monitoring measures are being implemented across the state. Officials expressed confidence that coordinated administrative action, strengthened healthcare preparedness, and active public participation will help contain the outbreak and prevent further spread of the infection.
