Pune: In a major crackdown on fake medical practitioners, the Pune Police have arrested a man who allegedly posed as a doctor for over 32 years in the Bhavani Peth’s Kasewadi area without possessing any valid medical qualifications or registration.

The arrest came after the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Health Department lodged a complaint as part of its ongoing drive against bogus doctors. According to reports, Dr. Vasundhara Patil, a medical officer with the PMC, filed an FIR at the Khadak Police Station on May 2, 2025, under the Maharashtra Medical Practitioners Act, 1961.

During the investigation, officials found that the accused, identified as Gundu, had been treating patients despite not being registered with any medical council or holding a recognized medical degree. The PMC’s legal department verified that the individual had no legitimate qualifications and recommended action under Section 33(2) of the Act.

Following the complaint, the accused sought anticipatory bail in the Shivajinagar Court, which was rejected, prompting him to move the Bombay High Court, where his plea was also dismissed. Subsequently, Gundu went absconding for several months.

A special team from the Khadak Police, led by PSI Jaysing Dhadhe, tracked down and arrested the fake doctor. He was later produced before the Shivajinagar Court, where the police sought custody to probe his whereabouts during his absconding period and identify any possible accomplices who may have helped him evade arrest. The court granted police custody until November 10, according to Pune Pulse.

Meanwhile, the PMC Health Department has intensified its citywide crackdown on fake doctors. Similar cases have been uncovered in Warje, Katraj, and Loni Kalbhor, where unqualified individuals were illegally treating patients for common ailments such as colds, coughs, and fever.

PMC officials have appealed to citizens to verify the credentials of medical practitioners before seeking treatment, warning that consulting unqualified individuals poses serious health risks.
