Kolkata: Tension prevailed at Barasat Medical College and Hospital after the relatives of a 34-year-old accident victim alleged that one of his eyes was removed while the body was kept in the hospital morgue. The shocking claim triggered a major protest, prompting West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to order an immediate probe.

The family claimed that the victim, Pritam Ghosh, had both eyes intact when he was brought to the hospital but discovered one eye missing after the post-mortem. The incident unfolded on Tuesday, sparking public outrage.

Family Blocks CM Mamata Banerjee’s Convoy

The victim’s relatives took their protest to the streets on Jessore Road, even blocking the Chief Minister’s convoy while she was returning from a public meeting in Bongaon.

Banerjee stopped, listened to the family, and directed officials to initiate a high-level inquiry on the spot. She also assured the family of financial assistance and a job for the victim’s mother from her own quota, reports UNI.

Three-Member Committee Formed

The hospital has constituted a three-member committee to investigate the allegations. CM Banerjee instructed the authorities to examine CCTV footage and submit a report at the earliest. She also promised strict action if anyone is found guilty.

Officials of Barasat Medical College have denied any wrongdoing but confirmed that a formal inquiry is underway.

Accident Details

According to the family, Pritam Ghosh was critically injured early Monday after being hit by a vehicle while crossing the road at Kazipara. He was rushed to Barasat Medical College, where doctors declared him dead. The post-mortem was conducted at the same facility.

Second Post-Mortem Scheduled

Speaking to TOI, Dr Abhijit Saha, MSVP of BMCH, said:

“The body is currently in the hospital morgue, and we have constituted a committee to look into the allegations. A second post-mortem will be conducted on Thursday.”

Dr Saha added that the family had initially given a verbal complaint, and he had requested a written one. However, the protest started before formal procedures could begin.
