Women Employees Allege Misconduct at Pune’s BAVMC; Administration Launches Probe
A senior official at the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)-run Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College (BAVMC) has come under scrutiny after at least four women employees accused him of workplace harassment and misconduct. Following the allegations, the college administration has initiated a formal inquiry and directed the official to proceed on compulsory leave pending investigation.
According to a complaint submitted to the college authorities, PMC officials, and Pune MP Murlidhar Mohol, the women alleged that the official repeatedly summoned them to his cabin, made them wait for extended periods, and disrupted their daily work responsibilities. The complainants further accused him of mental harassment and sending unsolicited and inappropriate messages through WhatsApp.
Inquiry Committee Formed Under Vishakha Guidelines
Speaking on the matter, BAVMC Dean Sunita Sawant said the institution has constituted an inquiry committee under the Vishakha guidelines to examine the allegations.
“The complaint reached us only a few days ago, and we will thoroughly investigate it. A workplace must be safe for every woman,” Sawant said, adding that it is too early to comment on whether police involvement will be required.
Staff Fear Repercussions Due to Official’s Senior Position
The complaint, submitted collectively by women employees, states that many staff members were reluctant to come forward publicly because the accused holds a permanent and influential position within the institution. The complainants expressed concerns about possible adverse consequences if they openly raised the issue.
In a letter dated June 1, the women alleged that the official’s behavior created an unsafe work environment. They claimed he frequently acted in an impolite and intrusive manner, interfered in employees’ personal lives despite objections, and engaged in conduct that caused significant discomfort among female staff members.
Demand for Fair Investigation and Strict Action
The complainants have called for a fair, transparent, and independent investigation while ensuring confidentiality and protection for those who have reported the alleged misconduct. They have also sought strict disciplinary action if the allegations are substantiated.
Fresh Controversy for BAVMC
The latest allegations add to a series of administrative challenges facing Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College. The institution has previously faced scrutiny from the National Medical Commission over alleged non-compliance with prescribed regulatory norms.
The outcome of the ongoing inquiry is expected to be closely watched, particularly in the context of workplace safety and accountability within medical and educational institutions.
