Renowned breast surgeon shares inspiring life lessons during institution’s 70th anniversary celebration

Mangalore: In a proud moment for the medical community, Dr P Raghu Ram, eminent breast surgeon and Padma Shri awardee, was conferred the Distinguished Alumnus Award by Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Mangalore, during the college’s 70-year celebration ceremony held on June 6, 2025.

Dr Raghu Ram, who is also the Founding Director of KIMS-Ushalakshmi Centre for Breast Diseases, Hyderabad, and recipient of the Dr B C Roy Award and Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE), was felicitated for his outstanding contributions to medicine and his transformative work in breast cancer awareness and care.

Fond Memories and Global Milestones

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Raghu Ram reflected on his formative years at KMC, saying:

“I completed my MS exam in 1995 with first place. Even after 30 years, KMC remains a core part of who I am.”

He credited his mentors and the college’s ethos for laying a solid foundation:

“It was here that I learned not just surgery but also etiquette, bedside manner, and patient care. I owe everything to my teachers and trainers.”

Dr Raghu Ram also shared his international journey, including his rapid success in obtaining FRCS from all three Royal Colleges in the UK within just 45 days, attributing this achievement to the rigorous training he received at KMC.

Nine Sutras for Life and Medicine

In an inspirational address, Dr Raghu Ram offered nine powerful ‘sutras’ (principles) that have guided his life and career:

  1. Trust and Ethics – Upholding the nobility of medicine
  2. Communication – As vital as clinical skill
  3. Focus – Eliminating distractions
  4. Hard Work – Non-negotiable for success
  5. Honesty – The foundation of character
  6. Transformative Habits – Including meditation and reflection
  7. Positive Thinking – Manifesting dreams into reality
  8. Gratitude – Especially towards parents and mentors
  9. Service to the Motherland – Giving back to society

These principles struck a deep chord with the audience, offering inspiration to young doctors and medical students alike.

Transforming Breast Cancer Care in India

Dr Raghu Ram’s legacy includes the implementation of South Asia’s largest population-based breast cancer screening programme and serving on the Government of India’s Technical Advisory Group on Breast Cancer. His efforts have played a pivotal role in early detection and awareness across the country.
