Sheohar: The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has confirmed that there are no plans to establish an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Sheohar, Bihar, under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).
In response to queries from Smt. Lovely Anand about setting up AIIMS-like hospitals with modern facilities in backward areas like Sheohar, the Minister of State for Health, Shri Pratap Rao Jadav, clarified that two AIIMS have already been allocated to Bihar under the PMSSY. The first, located in Patna, is fully operational, while the second, in Darbhanga, has been approved, with 187.44 acres of land handed over by the state government in September 2024.
To further enhance healthcare infrastructure in Bihar, six government medical colleges have been approved for upgrades under PMSSY through the construction of Super Specialty Blocks (SSBs) on a cost-sharing basis between the Centre and the state. These institutions include:
- Srikrishna Medical College, Muzaffarpur
- Darbhanga Medical College & Hospital, Darbhanga
- Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Bhagalpur
- Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College, Gaya
- Patna Medical College & Hospital, Patna
- Regional Institute of Ophthalmology at Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Patna
While significant efforts are being made to expand and strengthen tertiary healthcare in the state, there is currently no proposal for an AIIMS facility in Sheohar under the ongoing phase of the PMSSY.
