New framework aims to strengthen clinical research, ethics, scientific writing, and AI-based healthcare innovation in Indian medical colleges
In a significant move to transform India’s medical education and healthcare research ecosystem, the National Medical Commission (NMC) and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) are jointly working on a comprehensive framework to integrate clinical research more deeply into mainstream medical education and patient care.
According to reports, the proposed initiative is expected to provide medical students with structured exposure to clinical research, ethics, scientific writing, publication practices, and research methodology from the undergraduate level itself. The initiative also seeks to create a stronger culture of evidence-based healthcare research across medical institutions in India.
AI Tools Likely To Become Part Of Clinical Research Training
One of the key highlights of the proposed framework is the possible integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into clinical research and medical education. Authorities are reportedly examining how AI tools can be utilised for data analysis, predictive modelling, evidence generation, and research assistance.
At the same time, the framework is also expected to focus on establishing ethical safeguards and regulatory mechanisms for AI-driven medical research to ensure responsible and transparent use of emerging technologies in healthcare.
Confirming the development, NMC Chairperson Dr. Abhijat Chandrakant Sheth stated that an expert panel jointly constituted by NMC and ICMR is currently preparing a draft framework for the initiative.
Medical Colleges May Introduce Post-Doctoral PhD Programmes
As part of the proposed reforms, medical colleges across the country may introduce post-doctoral PhD programmes aimed at strengthening advanced medical and clinical research.
The framework may also ensure that MBBS and postgraduate medical students receive formal training in:
- Research methodology
- Clinical trials
- Scientific publication practices
- Ethical conduct in clinical research
- Thesis preparation and assessment
- Scientific writing and data interpretation
Officials stated that the broader objective is to integrate medical research with patient care in a way that research findings can directly contribute to practical healthcare solutions relevant to India.
Focus On Thesis Quality And Institutional Research Ecosystem
The proposal also emphasises improving the quality of thesis work and strengthening institutional research repositories in medical colleges. Students and faculty members may receive structured guidance on thesis selection, publication standards, and responsible conduct of clinical studies.
Authorities further stated that the framework aims to create a research-oriented ecosystem by combining clinical medicine, ethics, innovation, and emerging technologies under one integrated academic structure.
“The proposal is still at the discussion stage and different aspects are being worked out by the expert committee,” an official clarified.
Earlier Push For Indigenous Innovation And Research Integration
Earlier, NMC had announced plans to collaborate with ICMR to promote indigenous innovation in medical devices, medicines, and clinical research through dedicated PhD programmes.
Last year, the NMC Board of Governors also approved the integration of ICMR research principles into the curricula of MBBS, MD, MS, and PhD medical programmes to strengthen biomedical and clinical research exposure among medical students from the graduation level onwards.
