Major Expansion in Medical Education Infrastructure

New Delhi: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved a total of 118 medical colleges across the country over the last two years. Union Minister of State for Health, Smt. Anupriya Patel, shared this information in the Rajya Sabha.


74 Colleges Added in 2024, 44 in 2025

According to the data presented, 74 new medical colleges were approved in 2024, while 44 new colleges received approval in 2025, marking a significant expansion in the country’s medical education network.


Uttar Pradesh Leads the List, Followed by Maharashtra

Among the newly approved institutions, Uttar Pradesh tops the list with 21 new medical colleges, followed by 17 in Maharashtra, 14 in Rajasthan, 10 in Telangana, 8 in Madhya Pradesh, and 6 in West Bengal.


Growth Recorded Across Several States

Further additions include four medical colleges each in Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Karnataka, and Kerala; three each in Haryana, Assam, Gujarat, and Punjab; two each in Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, and Meghalaya; and one each in Jammu & Kashmir, Delhi, and Jharkhand.


Data Presented in Response to Parliamentary Query

The information was provided in response to a question by MP Smt. Sumitra Balmik, who sought details on the number of medical colleges established in the past two years, the state-wise distribution, the number of UG and PG seats added, and future plans for seat expansion.


State-Wise Breakdown of Colleges and Seats Shared

The Minister shared state-wise details of newly approved medical colleges along with MBBS and postgraduate seat additions. She informed the House that NMC approved 74 colleges for A.Y. 2024–25 and 44 colleges for A.Y. 2025–26.


Significant Increase in Undergraduate Seats

The Government has added 8,641 Undergraduate (MBBS) seats in A.Y. 2024–25 and 11,732 MBBS seats in A.Y. 2025–26, marking a major jump in UG medical capacity.


Postgraduate Seats Also Expanded

At the postgraduate level, 4,188 PG seats were added in A.Y. 2024–25, and 3,393 PG seats in A.Y. 2025–26 so far. The government stated that these expansions will significantly strengthen India’s healthcare and medical education system.
