New Delhi: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a stern warning to medical colleges across the country about impersonators fraudulently using the Commission’s name to extort money. In a recent notice, NMC Chairman Dr. B. Srinivas alerted the heads of medical institutes about individuals posing as high-ranking officials of the Commission.
The notice, dated January 30, 2025, revealed that these impersonators are falsely claiming to be the NMC Chairman or the President of Boards under the NMC and making phone calls to medical college authorities to demand money.
“It has come to the attention of NMC that certain individuals have been making phone calls to medical college authorities, impersonating as the Chairman of NMC or the President of the Board(s) under the National Medical Commission, seeking money,” the notice stated.
The Commission clarified that neither the NMC Chairman nor any Presidents, Members, or Secretaries of its Boards or authorities make such calls or solicit monetary favors. To combat this, the NMC has advised medical college heads and senior officials to avoid falling into such traps and to immediately report such incidents to the police by filing an FIR.
The notice further emphasized, “Heads and senior authorities of all medical colleges are advised not to engage in any conversation or communication with individuals claiming to be from the National Medical Commission. Any individual acting on such communications does so at their own risk.”
The NMC issued this warning to protect medical colleges and the public from misinformation and unauthorized activities by fraudsters. “This notice is issued to safeguard the public and medical colleges from any misinformation and to prevent unauthorized activities carried out by impersonators,” the Commission added.
This is not the first time the NMC has raised such an alert. In January 2023, the Commission warned against an impersonator using a specific mobile number and claiming to be the then NMC Chairman, Dr. BN Gangadhar. A similar warning was issued in May 2024, highlighting the recurring issue of individuals fraudulently posing as NMC officials.
Medical colleges and stakeholders are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious communications to the authorities immediately.
