Incident Overview:
A 28-year-old postgraduate doctor at Mayo Hospital, Nagpur, faced harassment when a fruit shop owner allegedly stalked her on campus at night and tried to enter her hostel room. The accused was apprehended by fellow PG residents and security personnel before being handed over to the police.
Details of the Incident:
- The incident occurred on a Wednesday around 9:30 pm. The doctor, returning from dinner with a colleague, noticed the man loitering near the hostel on his two-wheeler.
- Initially, he quietly left when confronted, but returned shortly after, followed the doctor into the hostel premises, and began aggressively knocking on her door around 10 pm.
- Alarmed, the doctor called for help. Fellow PG residents and the hostel watchman arrived, cornered the accused near the hostel entrance, and held him until the Tehsil police took him into custody around 12:30 am.
Legal Action and Investigation:
- A formal complaint was filed by the doctor at 2:31 am under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to molestation.
- Police confirmed the accused had no prior criminal record. During questioning, he claimed he was merely a “visitor” seeking directions.
- Senior Inspector Shubhangi Deshmukh noted, “Why venture deep inside the campus at night, bypassing main entrances and heading toward the PG hostels? CCTV footage is being analysed to establish his movements.”
Campus Security Concerns:
The incident has triggered panic among female doctors on the hostel campus and raised serious concerns about security arrangements at Mayo Hospital. Authorities are reviewing safety protocols to prevent recurrence.
