Kolkata: A tragic incident has occurred at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, where a 20-year-old MBBS student was found hanging in her hospital quarters. The second-year medical student, Ivy Prasad, was discovered by her mother, who became concerned after repeated unsuccessful attempts to contact her daughter on the night of February 2.
Details of the Incident: Ivy’s mother, also a doctor at the same medical facility, grew suspicious when she couldn’t reach Ivy by phone. Concerned for her daughter’s well-being, she rushed to the Kamarhati ESI Hospital quarters where Ivy was residing. After breaking open the door, Ivy was found hanging. She was immediately rushed to the hospital, but doctors declared her dead upon arrival.
No Suicide Note Found: Authorities have not recovered a suicide note, but the police suspect depression could have been a contributing factor. Investigators have filed a case of unnatural death, and an investigation is currently underway. Ivy’s body has been sent for post-mortem at the College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital.
Continued Scrutiny of RG Kar Medical College: This tragic death comes at a time when RG Kar Medical College has been in the spotlight due to the 2024 rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at the hospital. The incident resulted in the conviction of Sanjoy Roy, who was sentenced to life imprisonment on January 20. However, many, including the victim’s family and medical professionals, have raised concerns about the investigation and have called for further action and re-investigation.
The tragic death of Ivy Prasad has added to ongoing discussions regarding mental health support and security for medical students and staff within medical institutions.
