Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced a salary hike for doctors working in state-run hospitals, including senior and junior doctors, house staff, post-graduate trainees, and interns.

The decision follows protests by doctors over safety concerns in the wake of the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case. The tragic incident, in which a young doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital on August 9 last year, sparked outrage across the medical community.

Expressing solidarity with the victim’s family, Banerjee urged doctors to protect their female colleagues and treat them as “sisters.”

The salary revision aims to boost morale among healthcare workers and address concerns about working conditions and security in government hospitals.
