Kolhapur: The Maharashtra State Commission for Women (MSCW) has reviewed the ongoing investigation into the suicide of a female doctor posted at Phaltan Sub-District Hospital in Satara district. Chairperson Rupali Chakankar visited the hospital and met senior police and health officials to assess the progress of the probe.

During her visit on Monday morning, Chakankar met Satara Superintendent of Police (SP) Tushar Doshi and other officials to gather detailed updates. She confirmed that the investigation team is examining call data records (CDRs) and other digital evidence to track the communication and movements between the deceased doctor and the arrested police sub-inspector (PSI).

Background of the Case

Earlier this month, a 28-year-old woman doctor allegedly died by suicide, leaving a note written on her palm that named a police officer and a software engineer, accusing them of rape and mental harassment. Police subsequently arrested both individuals under charges of rape and abetment to suicide.

According to earlier reports, the doctor had been working at the Phaltan Sub-District Hospital when she was allegedly subjected to pressure from certain influential political figures to modify medical reports of police detainees, leading to internal inquiries and alleged harassment before her death.

Commission’s Observations

Chakankar stated that preliminary findings from the call data analysis show no contact between the PSI and the doctor since March. She added that the rape allegations are currently being verified through postmortem and forensic reports.

Speaking to The Times of India, Chakankar revealed further details about the events preceding the incident. “Investigations have shown that on Laxmi Puja day (October 21), the doctor and her landlord’s son had a quarrel over taking photos. Later, she kept calling and messaging him, expressing suicidal thoughts. He replied that she had shared similar thoughts earlier as well,” she said.

Political and Public Reactions

The case has sparked political controversy, with opposition leaders alleging that the deceased doctor was pressured by influential representatives in connection with her official duties. The allegations have led to cross-complaints and an internal departmental inquiry by senior health officials.

Broader Context

The tragic death has triggered statewide outrage among the medical community. Various doctors’ associations have demanded stronger safety measures and mental health support for healthcare workers, especially women doctors in rural and government hospitals.
