Maharashtra-Medical-Council

Mumbai: The Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) is set to roll out QR codes for every doctor registered with the council in an effort to curb quackery and empower patients. The initiative, which is expected to be launched within two weeks, will allow patients to verify the qualifications and MMC registration numbers of doctors via their mobile devices.

Key Details of the Initiative:

  • Purpose: The QR code system aims to combat the growing problem of unqualified practitioners and prevent patients from seeking treatment from fake doctors. With over two lakh registered doctors in Maharashtra, the QR codes will be issued to doctors who have renewed their registration with MMC.
  • Verification Process: Patients visiting a clinic will be able to scan the QR code prominently displayed by the doctor. The code will provide essential information such as the doctor’s name, qualifications, registration number, and the validity of their registration.
  • Administrator’s Statement: Dr. Vinky Rughwani, Administrator of MMC, highlighted the importance of this initiative, noting that many people suffer due to treatment by unqualified professionals. The QR code system is expected to be a tool to protect patients from fraudulent medical practitioners.

MMC Elections Scheduled for April 3

In a related development, the MMC elections will take place on April 3, after more than two years without a governing body. The elections will be conducted through a secret ballot at district headquarters, under the supervision of district collectors.

  • Previous Administration: The MMC has been operating without an elected committee since August 7, 2022, following the expiration of the previous term. Dr. Pallavi Saple, Dean of Sir JJ Group of Hospitals, was appointed as administrator and served until October 9, 2023. Dr. Dilip Mhaisekar briefly held the role before Dr. Vinky Rughwani took over.
  • Election Details: The upcoming elections will see the appointment of nine members to the 18-member committee. The deadline for filing nominations is set for February 18.

This move to introduce QR codes is seen as a significant step towards ensuring patient safety and improving accountability in the healthcare system.
