Madurai: A recent Right to Information (RTI) query revealed that the Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation (TNMSC) earned over Rs 511 crore from CT and MRI scan services in government hospitals over the past five years. Madurai-based health activist A Veronica Mary has called for expanding these services to all medical college hospitals and district taluk headquarters hospitals to benefit rural populations.

The RTI response showed a steady increase in revenue from these services, which nearly doubled in the last five years. However, Mary highlighted that the lack of such facilities in many southern Tamil Nadu taluk hospitals forces patients to pay higher costs at private hospitals.

Mary and other activists have urged the state government to use the funds generated from these services to expand the availability of CT and MRI scans at more government hospitals.
