In a determined effort to reform the public healthcare system, Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Balbir Singh made an unannounced visit to Civil Hospital, Ludhiana on Monday. The surprise inspection aimed to evaluate patient care standards and address ongoing irregularities that have plagued the facility.

During his tour, the minister expressed serious concern over incidents of theft within the hospital premises — including missing water tank covers — and directed the local police to promptly investigate and identify those responsible. Emphasising a zero-tolerance policy towards malpractice, Dr. Singh warned that strict action would be taken against anyone found guilty of corruption or negligence.

He visited various wards, interacted with patients and their attendants, and assured them of the government’s commitment to delivering affordable, quality healthcare. “This is your hospital, and it is your responsibility to run it with honesty and dedication,” he reminded the hospital staff, urging them to serve with integrity and compassion.

Focus on COVID Safety and Dengue Prevention

Addressing public concerns over COVID-19, Dr. Singh stated that the situation remains under control but encouraged citizens to continue following COVID-appropriate behaviour, such as wearing masks and maintaining hygiene, especially in crowded places.

On the dengue front, he spotlighted the state’s flagship campaign ‘Har Shukarvaar, Dengue Te Vaar’ (Every Friday, War on Dengue), under which health teams are conducting door-to-door inspections to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds. He urged people to maintain cleanliness and support the health department’s initiatives to prevent the spread of dengue.

Crackdown on Bribery and Malpractice

Issuing a clear warning, Dr. Singh said, “If any employee is found taking bribes for work, strict disciplinary action will be taken immediately.” His remarks came in the wake of a recent scandal where a surgeon at the same hospital was suspended after being caught on video accepting a bribe from a patient’s family. The footage surfaced during an event attended by the minister himself, prompting swift disciplinary action.

The minister’s proactive visit reflects the government’s renewed focus on transparency, accountability, and the upliftment of public healthcare services across Punjab.
