Mob Violence Erupts Over Unreturned Funds in North Dinajpur
Raiganj: Chaos erupted in the Goalgachh area of Sujali under Islampur Police Station on Saturday afternoon as a group of angry locals stormed the house of Soleman Ali, a self-proclaimed doctor, demanding the return of their invested money. The mob vandalized his residence, pelting stones and shattering window panes, prompting police intervention. Law enforcement resorted to a lathicharge to disperse the crowd, leaving the area tense.
Villagers Accuse Ali of Fraud
According to Abdul Sattar, president of the Sujali Anchal Committee of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Soleman Ali allegedly collected over ₹1 crore from villagers last year, promising high monthly interest rates. However, neither the promised returns nor the principal amounts have been paid back.
“With Eid approaching, people desperately need their money. When they confronted Ali at his home, an altercation broke out between some women and his wife. We urge the police to ensure that locals get their money back before Eid,” Sattar stated.
Police Launch Investigation
Inspector-in-Charge Hirak Biswas confirmed that law enforcement swiftly intervened to control the situation. “An investigation has been initiated into the matter,” he said, assuring that necessary action will be taken.
The incident has heightened tensions in the locality, with residents demanding justice and financial restitution.
