Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) has suspended its former Rajya Sabha member, Santanu Sen, a medical professional and an alumnus of RG Kar Hospital. Sen had been an outspoken critic of the horrific rape and murder of a junior woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
TMC State Vice-President Jayprakash Majumdar confirmed the suspension, stating it was due to Sen’s involvement in “anti-party activities.” However, Majumdar did not specify the nature of these activities.
Sen, on his part, expressed surprise over the suspension, stating that he was informed of the decision by media personnel and had not yet received any official communication from the party. He claimed he was unaware of the specific reasons behind his suspension and clarified that he had not been under investigation by the Enforcement Directorate or the Central Bureau of Investigation.
Since the tragic incident at RG Kar Hospital, Sen had been vocal within the party, particularly criticizing the former principal of the hospital, Sandip Ghosh. Tensions between Sen and the party leadership have escalated since then. In December, Sen was removed from his position as a state-government-nominated member of the West Bengal Medical Council, and earlier, he was also removed from the party’s spokesperson list.
The conflict also saw a cold war between Sen and TMC legislator Sudipto Roy, who is also a medical professional. Roy’s office and nursing home were raided by the ED in connection with financial irregularities at RG Kar Hospital. Roy was summoned and questioned by the ED in relation to the case.
