A 37-year-old woman anaesthetist working at a private hospital in Aluva was found dead at her residence in Marampally, Perumbavoor, after allegedly administering herself an overdose of anaesthesia.
Police recovered a vial of anaesthetic drugs and a syringe near her body during the preliminary investigation. Although the incident appears to be a case of suicide, no note was found at the scene.
The doctor’s colleagues raised alarm after she failed to report for duty and did not answer repeated calls. They reached her apartment, and with the help of neighbours, broke open the door, only to find her lying lifeless inside.
According to investigators, the flat was locked from the inside, and there were no signs of foul play or struggle. “A bottle and syringe were found near the body. We have not found any evidence so far indicating foul play. She was staying alone, and the flat was locked from inside,” a police officer told TOI.
The officer further added that the doctor, who usually ordered dinner regularly, had not done so on Thursday night, suggesting she may have died then. Police are awaiting the autopsy report to confirm the cause of death, while her locked phone is also being examined for further clues.
This incident follows a series of similar tragedies among young doctors in Kerala. Earlier, a 35-year-old senior resident at Government Medical College Hospital, Manjeri, was found dead in her apartment, allegedly due to depression.
