
Lucknow: The King George’s Medical University administration has suspended a senior resident doctor following an alleged suicide attempt by a female resident doctor, who accused her colleague of harassment and pressuring her to convert her religion for marriage. The accused has also been barred from entering the campus, except for inquiry-related proceedings.
FIR Registered on Family’s Complaint
A First Information Report has been registered against the accused doctor based on a complaint filed by the woman doctor’s father. Prior to this, the family had raised the matter on the Chief Minister’s public grievance portal and with the Uttar Pradesh State Women’s Commission.
Chief Minister Assures Fair Probe
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath personally spoke to the female doctor and assured her of an impartial investigation. The doctor reportedly informed the Chief Minister that the accused was forming a group within KGMU and was allegedly involved in religious conversion activities. The Chief Minister stated that no culprit would be spared and sought a detailed report from the university.
Allegations of Harassment and Coercion
According to the complaint, the woman doctor alleged that she was emotionally exploited by her colleague, who pressured her to convert to Islam for marriage. She stated that after she refused, the harassment continued, pushing her into severe mental distress.
Suicide Attempt and Medical Care
The incident came to light after the woman doctor allegedly attempted suicide by consuming a large quantity of medicines in her hostel room at KGMU. She was rushed to the Trauma Centre and later shifted to the Critical Care Management intensive care unit for advanced treatment.
Security and Internal Inquiry
Police protection has been provided to the woman doctor on a round-the-clock basis. The Vishakha Committee, constituted under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, submitted its report to the KGMU administration, following which the accused doctor was suspended.
Statements Before Women’s Commission
The victim, a resident doctor pursuing MD in Pathology, appeared before the State Women’s Commission along with her father. She reportedly expressed fear and stated that she had been subjected to prolonged torture. The accused doctor, a senior resident in the same department, appeared before the inquiry committee and denied all allegations.
Serious Claims of Exploitation and Blackmail
In her detailed statement, the woman doctor alleged that the accused established physical relations with her on the promise of marriage, forced her to terminate a pregnancy, and later demanded religious conversion. She further claimed that he threatened to make her private photos and videos public, allegedly blackmailing her and continuing to pressure her to convert. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
