Malappuram : A doctor couple in Tirurangadi has come under the scanner of the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) for allegedly circumventing official protocols, with the husband—who runs a private clinic—reportedly treating patients at a government hospital in place of his wife, a government-appointed medical officer.
The incident took place at the Government Taluk Hospital in Tirurangadi, where Dr. Sahita is officially posted. Investigations revealed that her husband had been attending to patients and handling emergency cases during her official duty hours without any formal authorization from the Health Department.
The matter came to light after High Court lawyer Kulathur Jaising filed a formal complaint with the VACB. Acting on the complaint, the bureau launched an investigation and confirmed that the husband had indeed been treating patients illegally under the guise of his wife’s position. The VACB has now recommended that the Health Department take stringent action against the couple.
According to reports, the duty swap occurred while Dr. Sahita was attending to her newborn at the hospital. Her husband allegedly assumed full responsibility for emergency consultations and patient examinations in her absence—a move that violates established government norms and raises serious questions of ethics and accountability.
The issue has triggered a strong response from local civic groups. The Muslim Youth League has demanded a comprehensive inquiry, lodging a complaint with Health Minister Veena George and the District Medical Officer (DMO).
Medical professionals and watchdog groups have called the incident a grave breach of protocol, stressing that no doctor not appointed by the government should be permitted to offer treatment in public hospitals without formal approval.
