Faculty Member’s Engagement Declared Void After Failing to Resume Duties Following Joining
The Jammu and Kashmir Government has cancelled the engagement of an Associate Professor in the Department of Community Medicine at Government Medical College (GMC), Handwara, citing non-compliance with the terms and conditions of his appointment.
According to Government Order No. 590-JK(HME) of 2026 issued on Wednesday, the Health and Medical Education Department declared that the doctor’s engagement, made under the provisions of S.O. 364 of 2020, stands cancelled ab initio.
As per the order, the faculty member joined GMC Handwara on January 13, 2026. However, the Principal of the medical college later informed the department that the doctor did not report for assigned duties after joining the institution.
The department stated that the doctor was directed to resume duties through an official communication issued on February 6, 2026. Instead of rejoining, he submitted his resignation the following day without serving the mandatory notice period required under S.O. 364 of 2020, reports Kashmir Life.
After examining the matter, the Health and Medical Education Department concluded that the faculty member neither discharged his assigned responsibilities after joining nor complied with the prescribed resignation procedure under the applicable rules.
S.O. 364 of 2020 governs the appointment of faculty members in government medical colleges on an academic arrangement basis. The provisions mandate compliance with service obligations, resignation procedures, and the prescribed notice period before leaving the post.
The department stated that the cancellation of the engagement reflects the government’s emphasis on strict adherence to contractual conditions and academic service norms in government medical institutions across Jammu and Kashmir.
Earlier, Medical Dialogues had reported that a senior cardiologist at Government Medical College (GMC), Anantnag, was suspended by the Jammu and Kashmir Government over alleged irregularities in reporting cardiac procedures under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY). The doctor denied the allegations, maintaining that the procedures were clinically justified.
