Ranchi – In a landmark decision aimed at upholding human dignity and compassion, the Hemant Soren-led Jharkhand government has directed all hospitals across the state—both public and private—not to withhold the bodies of deceased patients due to unpaid medical bills.
The state health department issued formal instructions to all civil surgeons, citing increasing instances where hospitals allegedly refused to release bodies solely on the grounds of pending dues. Terming the practice “inhuman” and “morally unacceptable,” the directive emphasizes that grieving families must not be subjected to additional trauma during already painful times.
“Such actions cause unnecessary mental agony to bereaved families and go against basic moral and humanitarian principles,” the government circular stated.
Strict Compliance Mandated
All civil surgeons have been asked to monitor hospitals under their jurisdiction and take immediate action if such violations are reported. The government has made it clear: under no circumstances can any hospital withhold a body on the basis of pending bills.
Health Minister Shares Emotional Message
State Health Minister Dr. Irfan Ansari, announcing the decision on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), wrote:
“As soon as I took oath as Health Minister, I made a firm commitment—dead bodies must not be withheld by private hospitals under any circumstances. This directive brings solace to thousands of families across Jharkhand.”
He added:
“Before being a minister, I am a doctor. I have seen families break down, helplessly crying outside hospitals that refused to hand over bodies due to unpaid bills. I resolved that if ever given the opportunity, I would ensure this inhumane practice is ended.”
CM Hemant Soren’s Role Acknowledged
Dr. Ansari thanked Chief Minister Hemant Soren for his leadership and support in implementing this “humanitarian initiative.” Calling it a “new foundation of healthcare in Jharkhand,” he said the move symbolizes a system where sensitivity, empathy, and justice take precedence over procedure and profit.
