New Delhi: A shocking case of alleged theft has surfaced from a private hospital in East Delhi’s Shahdara, where a staff member reportedly stole gold jewellery from a patient moments after she passed away. The incident gained widespread attention after a video, purportedly showing the staffer removing jewellery from the deceased woman, went viral on social media.
Police Register Case Under BNS
Following the incident, the Krishna Nagar police registered a case under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to theft. Officials confirmed that an investigation has been initiated and efforts are underway to verify the authenticity of the viral video and identify those responsible.
Complaint Filed by Victim’s Son
According to a senior police officer, the complaint was lodged on November 11 by a resident of Pandav Nagar, Vishwas Nagar, whose mother had been admitted to the hospital’s emergency ward in a critical condition. She was immediately placed on oxygen support, and soon after, the doctors advised shifting her to another facility for advanced treatment.
Jewellery Missing After Attendant Returns
The complainant stated that he stepped out briefly to arrange an ambulance as directed by the hospital staff. However, upon returning, he discovered that his mother’s earrings and ear chain were missing. He promptly alerted the hospital administration, which later handed over only the earrings, while the chain remained untraceable.
Family Accuses Staff of Initial Denial
Speaking to the media, the complainant alleged that hospital staff initially denied any knowledge of the missing jewellery. They reportedly asked the family to recheck the body thoroughly before taking it away, raising further suspicion about the conduct of the personnel involved.
Viral Video Intensifies Scrutiny
The video circulating online has intensified scrutiny of the hospital’s internal procedures and staff accountability. Police officials are examining the footage to match the sequence of events with the complainant’s statements. The matter has triggered strong reactions from local residents and social media users questioning hospital safety and ethics.
Past Incidents Highlight Security Concerns
This case comes amid several recent incidents of theft involving medical institutions and personnel. Earlier, reports highlighted a caretaker allegedly stealing gold worth Rs 2.9 lakh from a doctor in Trichy. In another case, 45 sovereigns of gold ornaments were stolen from a doctor’s residence in Kozhikode, raising concerns about rising thefts linked to healthcare settings.
Investigation Continues as Family Seeks Justice
The Delhi Police have assured that a thorough investigation is underway. The complainant’s family continues to seek justice, hoping the viral video will aid in identifying the accused and recovering the missing jewellery. Authorities have also indicated that the hospital may face further questioning regarding staff verification and security protocols.
