Protective Gear, Diagnostic Equipment, Medicines and Nutritional Supplements Included in Latest Consignment
India has dispatched the second tranche of medical assistance to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), reaffirming its commitment to supporting African nations in tackling the ongoing Ebola outbreak. The 43-tonne humanitarian aid consignment includes protective gear, diagnostic and monitoring equipment, medicines, and nutritional supplements aimed at enhancing public health preparedness across the continent.
External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar announced the development on social media platform X, highlighting India’s continued efforts to assist Africa in managing the public health emergency.
“India has dispatched the second tranche of medical assistance to Africa CDC, comprising protective gear, diagnostic & monitoring equipment, medicines, and supplements. Confident that this 43 tons consignment will further strengthen public health preparedness and bolster Ebola response capacities across Africa,” Jaishankar posted.
India Continues Support for Africa’s Ebola Emergency Response
The latest shipment follows the first tranche of urgent medical supplies and protective kits sent by India on May 24. At the time, Jaishankar had emphasized India’s commitment to helping African nations respond to the emerging Ebola health crisis.
The Indian government has maintained close coordination with Africa CDC and affected countries as concerns over the outbreak continue to grow.
Medical Supplies Handed Over Through Indian Mission in Uganda
Speaking during a weekly media briefing in New Delhi on May 29, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that the medical supplies were formally handed over by India’s High Commissioner to Uganda, Upender Singh Rawat, to the Africa CDC office.
India has also expressed its readiness to provide further assistance to affected countries and regional health authorities as they work to contain the outbreak.
Africa CDC Welcomes India’s Assistance
On May 31, Africa CDC welcomed India’s emergency medical support aimed at combating the worsening Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The organization expressed gratitude for New Delhi’s timely assistance during the ongoing public health crisis.
The support comes as international health agencies intensify efforts to contain the spread of the disease and strengthen healthcare systems in vulnerable regions.
WHO Declared Ebola Outbreak a Global Health Emergency
The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Ebola situation in the region a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on May 17, prompting countries and international organizations to mobilize resources and support.
Ebola is a severe and often fatal disease that spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, contaminated materials, or infected animals. Common symptoms include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and weakness, while severe cases can result in internal and external bleeding.
India’s Growing Role in Global Health Assistance
India has significantly expanded its medical and humanitarian assistance to African countries in recent years. During the COVID-19 pandemic, New Delhi supplied vaccines, medicines, and medical equipment to several African nations under its global health outreach initiatives.
The latest Ebola-related assistance underscores India’s role as a key partner in strengthening healthcare resilience and emergency response capabilities across Africa.
