Doctors’ body urges district administration to ensure security for medical professionals and protect hospital services
Darbhanga: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) Darbhanga branch has raised serious concerns over the safety and security of medical professionals after an alleged incident of extortion and disruption at a private hospital in the district.
The association has written to the Civil Surgeon of Darbhanga seeking an immediate investigation and strict action against those responsible. According to the IMA, such incidents can directly impact the ability of doctors to provide uninterrupted healthcare services to patients.
IMA Seeks Immediate Investigation
In its letter to the district health authorities, the IMA urged the administration to ensure adequate security for the affected doctors and strengthen safety arrangements in hospitals across the district.
The association warned that repeated incidents targeting healthcare professionals can create a hostile working environment for doctors and may disrupt critical patient services.
Incident Discussed in IMA Meeting
The issue was discussed during a meeting of the Indian Medical Association Darbhanga Branch held on Saturday evening under the chairmanship of Dr. Hari Damodar Singh. The meeting was attended by more than three dozen doctors from the city.
During the meeting, doctors expressed serious concern about a recent incident that allegedly occurred at a private hospital run by a doctor couple in the city.
Allegations of Intimidation and Property Damage
According to the letter submitted to authorities, individuals accompanying the relatives of a patient—described as so-called media personnel—allegedly disrupted hospital operations.
The association claimed that these individuals attempted to damage hospital property and allegedly tried to intimidate the doctor couple through extortion attempts.
Doctors at the meeting expressed concern that such behaviour poses a serious threat to the safety of medical professionals and could interfere with hospital functioning, ultimately affecting patient care.
Demands Placed Before District Administration
In its representation to the authorities, the IMA Darbhanga branch has placed several demands before the district administration. These include conducting a fair and time-bound investigation into the incident, identifying those responsible, and initiating strict legal action.
The association has also sought security protection for the doctor couple and called for stronger administrative measures to ensure the safety of doctors and healthcare staff in hospitals across the district.
Concern Over Increasing Attacks on Doctors
The doctors’ body also urged the administration to take strict cognisance of what it described as increasing attacks on doctors and alleged extortion attempts by certain individuals claiming to be journalists.
According to the association, failure to address such incidents promptly could embolden anti-social elements and make it difficult for doctors to work in a safe and fear-free environment.
The IMA has requested the district administration to take immediate action to safeguard healthcare professionals and ensure the smooth functioning of medical services in the region.
