Peddlers used gay dating apps to target customers; 100 grams of MDMA seized
Hyderabad: In a major crackdown, Hyderabad police busted a drug peddling racket and arrested nine people, including a general surgeon from a private hospital, for alleged involvement in selling and consuming MDMA (Ecstasy). Around 100 grams of the synthetic drug were seized during the operation.
How the Racket Operated
Police revealed that the peddlers, M. Ramakanth alias Kiran and Mudavath Prasad, used gay dating apps like Grindr to identify and target potential buyers. They allegedly used code names such as “Rocket” and “Pigeon” on their profiles to discreetly market drugs. Encrypted chats and online platforms were used to avoid detection.
Raid and Arrests
The racket came to light after police raided a flat in Chilkalguda based on credible intelligence. Investigations revealed that Ramakanth had procured MDMA from a Nigerian supplier in Bengaluru before distributing it in Hyderabad with Prasad’s help. Both were not only peddling but also consuming narcotics themselves.
Among the customers traced was a general surgeon from Malakpet, an IT recruiter, a sex worker, and several other professionals. Police stated that the surgeon, a resident of Saidabad, regularly purchased MDMA from the accused.
Previous Criminal History
Officials confirmed that both Ramakanth and Prasad were previously arrested in July 2024 on drug-related charges but were later released on bail. Despite this, they resumed operations and continued to expand their clientele in the city.
Ongoing Probe
Authorities are now working to identify more buyers linked to the network. The police warned that strict action would be taken against both peddlers and consumers under the NDPS Act.
