Hyderabad-based neurosurgeon Dr Suhail Anjum has been recognised by the Indian Book of World Records for successfully performing an extremely complex and high-risk cervical spine surgery using a technique never before attempted anywhere in the world.

Official Recognition and Award

Officials from the Indian Book of World Records formally documented Dr Anjum’s achievement and presented him with a special award on February 6. Dr Anjum is associated with Glenfield Mallareddy Brain and Heart Hospital on Chapel Road in Hyderabad.

Innovative Surgical and Anaesthesia Method

According to reports, the surgery involved a groundbreaking approach to both surgical procedure and anaesthesia management. Hypobaric drugs were administered through a continuous thoracic subarachnoid block, an unconventional method chosen because conventional anaesthesia posed severe risks to the patient.

Ensuring Patient Safety

This innovative technique made it possible to complete the surgery without endangering the patient’s life. Medical experts noted that the approach marked a major advancement in handling extremely high-risk spinal operations.

Felicitation Ceremony at Hospital

A felicitation programme was organised at Glenfield Hospital to honour the achievement. Representatives of the Indian Book of World Records, Dr Pawani and Dr Vivekananda, were present, while senior radiologist Dr MA Mateen presided over the event.

Hospital Leadership’s Appreciation

Medical Director Dr Azhar Ansari congratulated Dr Suhail Anjum on behalf of the hospital management. Director Younus Ansari welcomed the guests and praised the medical team for accomplishing a rare and challenging procedure.

Patient’s Critical Condition

Addressing the gathering, Dr Anjum explained that the patient, aged over 65, was suffering from multiple serious ailments, including a history of bypass surgery, kidney disease, thyroid disorders, and other complications. A cervical spine tumour had caused repeated episodes of paralysis in both the hands and legs.

National and International Acknowledgement

Dr Anjum’s unique technique has now gained wider recognition. His report has been published in an American medical journal, while the Indian Book of World Records has officially recorded the achievement and awarded him a citation for the world-first procedure.
