Personal belongings found in resort; authorities suspect he was swept away by rising floodwaters

Guwahati/Parshuram Kund: In a distressing incident, Dr. Debenjit Kumar Sharma, a 39-year-old doctor from Guwahati, has been reported missing since the morning of May 31 after he left his resort near Parshuram Kund in Arunachal Pradesh’s Lohit district. Authorities fear that he may have been swept away by the swollen Lohit River, which is witnessing a dangerous surge due to relentless rainfall.

According to Lohit SP Thutan Jamba, Dr. Sharma was last seen leaving the resort at 8:00 AM on Friday. When he failed to return and could not be contacted, the resort owner alerted Wakro Police Station later that evening. A search and rescue operation was immediately launched but no trace of him has been found yet.

“We suspect he may have gone near the river and was swept away by the rising floodwaters,” SP Jamba told reporters.

Belongings Left Behind

Dr. Sharma’s motorcycle, camera, leg guards, and ID documents were found intact inside his resort room, ruling out possibilities of a planned departure or robbery.

Harsh Terrain, Heavy Rain Hampering Rescue

The terrain around Parshuram Kund, a well-known pilgrimage site on the banks of the Lohit River, is treacherous—especially during monsoon. Constant rainfall has made the rescue effort increasingly difficult, according to authorities.

Public Advisory Issued

Police have issued a public warning, urging pilgrims, locals, and tourists to exercise extreme caution near riverbanks, as currents remain dangerously high. Parshuram Kund is known to attract thousands of devotees, particularly during monsoon months.

Broader Context: Similar Tragedy in Tungabhadra

This incident follows a recent tragedy in which a 26-year-old woman doctor from Hyderabad drowned in the Tungabhadra River during a trip with friends. Her body was recovered after a 32-hour joint rescue operation.

As search teams continue to comb the area around Lohit River, the fate of Dr. Debenjit Sharma remains uncertain, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
