Complaint triggers police action
Puducherry: A government doctor has been arrested by Puducherry police on charges of cheating an auxiliary nurse midwife (ANM) of ₹1 crore and misappropriating six sovereigns of gold jewellery.

Alleged land deal fraud
The complainant, who works at a government primary health centre in Ariankuppam, alleged that the doctor, posted at the Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital and Postgraduate Institute, promised to sell her a plot of land within town limits and induced her to part with money and jewellery.

Large monetary transfers claimed
According to the complaint, the nurse transferred ₹1 crore in three online instalments in July 2024 to the bank account of the doctor’s wife, believing that the land transaction would be completed soon.

Gold jewellery also taken
The complainant further alleged that in July 2023, the doctor had taken six sovereigns of gold jewellery from her, which was neither returned nor adjusted against the promised property deal.

Repeated attempts to recover money
Reports stated that the complainant and her husband made several visits to the doctor’s residence and clinic seeking repayment of the money and return of the jewellery after the deal failed to materialise.

Allegations of harassment
During their final interaction, the complainant alleged that the doctor abused and harassed her, prompting her to approach the police and file a formal complaint.

Case registered under BNS
Based on the complaint, Ariankuppam police registered a case under Sections 79 (insulting the modesty of a woman), 318(2) (cheating) and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Doctor remanded to custody
The accused doctor was subsequently arrested and produced before a court, which remanded him to judicial custody, police officials said.
