Accused Had Forged Medical Degree, Ran Clinic Without Formal Training

New Delhi: In a significant breakthrough, Delhi Police’s Crime Branch has arrested a 48-year-old woman posing as a doctor, nearly nine years after she performed a botched surgery that led to the death of a pregnant woman in West Delhi’s Ranhola area.

The accused had been on the run since being declared a Proclaimed Offender in 2016. She was apprehended from a residence in Greater Kailash-II, where she had been working as a caretaker, officials said on Wednesday.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Aditya Gautam, the case dates back to September 2009, when a man admitted his pregnant wife to a clinic in Vikas Nagar due to abdominal pain. The woman, after being given medication, was initially discharged but returned the next day as the pain persisted. The accused allegedly recommended surgery, which she carried out herself. Days later, the patient was declared dead at Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Hospital.

Investigations later revealed that the accused had no formal medical education and had forged a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) degree from Bihar. In reality, she had only studied up to Class XII and previously worked as a clinic assistant in Uttam Nagar around 2005-06, where she learned basic medical procedures.

“She opened her own clinic in 2008, mainly treating women with gynaecological issues,” said DCP Gautam. A case under IPC Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and the Delhi Medical Council Act was registered at Ranhola police station in 2011.

Police said the woman managed to evade arrest for years by frequently changing locations. A dedicated team tracked her movements and finally arrested her after locating one of her recent hideouts.

Further investigation into the case is ongoing.
