New Delhi: In a disturbing case of violence against medical professionals, the on-duty Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and other doctors, including a female doctor, were allegedly verbally abused, assaulted, and threatened by a drunk male patient attendant and a female companion at Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel Hospital, Delhi.

The incident occurred around 3:30 am on October 6, 2025, when a patient with emergency complications was brought to the hospital’s OPD. As doctors prepared the patient for an ECG test, the male attendant, reportedly intoxicated, began pulling the patient by his leg.

Assault on Doctors

When hospital staff intervened, the male attendant verbally abused and threatened the on-duty doctors and the CMO. He was eventually sent outside by the patient’s relatives. Shortly afterward, a female attendant accompanying the patient began shouting, abusing, and threatening the hospital staff and doctors, including the female doctor on duty.

The hospital immediately informed the police, but by the time law enforcement arrived, the female attendant had already been sent home by the other relatives.

One of the assaulted doctors documented in the patient’s OPD chart that the attendants misbehaved, verbally abused, and raised a hand against a doctor.

Safety Concerns and Police Response

Sharing the incident on X (formerly Twitter), a doctor highlighted the inadequate police response, stating that the Police Control Room (PCR) refused immediate action, citing the unavailability of a female constable.

Describing the situation as “shocking” and “shameful,” the doctor questioned the safety of female medical professionals, writing:

“Drunk attendants verbally assaulted and threatened female doctors and the CMO on duty at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Hospital, Patel Nagar. PCR refused action, citing ‘no female constable available.’ Is this women’s safety in Delhi?”
