Former IGMC Surgeon and Medical Education Leader to Head AMRU for Three-Year Term
Renowned surgeon and senior medical academician Dr D.K. Verma has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of Atal Medical and Research University (AMRU), Mandi, Himachal Pradesh.
The appointment was notified on Wednesday by Himachal Pradesh Governor and Chancellor Kavinder Gupta under the provisions of the Himachal Pradesh Health Sciences Act, 2017, following the recommendation of the State Government.
According to the official notification, Dr Verma will serve as Vice-Chancellor for three years from the date of assuming office or until attaining the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier. During his tenure, he will receive salary, allowances, and other service benefits as per the applicable rules, reports Amar Ujala.
Born on December 8, 1959, Dr Verma is a native of Shimla. He completed his schooling at DAV School, Lakkar Bazaar, Shimla, before pursuing medical education at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, where he obtained his MBBS, MD (Pharmacology), and MS (Surgery) degrees.
Over his distinguished career, Dr Verma served as Professor and Head of the Department of Surgery at IGMC Shimla and Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar Government Medical College, Nahan.
He also completed a Commonwealth Fellowship in Endo-Urology at Southampton General Hospital, United Kingdom, further strengthening his expertise in advanced surgical care. In addition, he served as the Principal of Lal Bahadur Shastri Government Medical College, Ner Chowk, reports Himachal Guardian.
The appointment brings permanent leadership to AMRU, which had been functioning without a regular Vice-Chancellor for an extended period. The move is expected to accelerate the university’s administrative functioning, strengthen academic governance, and support further development of medical education in the state.
Earlier, Medical Dialogues had reported that Punjab Medical Education and Research Secretary Manjit Singh Brar was given the officiating charge of Vice-Chancellor of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) following the completion of the tenure of Dr Rajeev Sood.
