Patiala, Punjab: Police in Patran, Patiala district, have registered a case against four individuals for allegedly defrauding a Scheduled Caste student by promising him an MBBS seat at a government medical college in Mumbai. The complaint was filed by the student’s father, Dr. Ram, who runs a private hospital in the Shatrana area of Patiala.

Accused Identified

The accused have been identified as Saurav Krishan Upadhyay, Rakesh Kumar, Sapan Taneja, and Arvind Gangavar, who reportedly run a consultancy service in Dwarka, New Delhi. Although the complaint was lodged over a month ago, the case was officially registered after an initial investigation.

Legal Action & Investigation

Following a preliminary inquiry by the DSP (Intelligence), the police have booked the accused under sections 316(2), 318(4), 336(3), 340(2), 61(2) of the BNS. According to Gurmeet Singh, SHO of Shatrana police station, a case was filed on Sunday, and raids will soon be conducted to apprehend the suspects.

How the Fraud Unfolded

Dr. Ram stated that his son had secured the 180th rank under the SC category in NEET, after which the accused approached him, promising an MBBS seat at Grant Government Medical College in Mumbai.

  • The doctor paid ₹22 lakh in total.
  • Initially, ₹57,000 was paid by cheque, followed by ₹5 lakh as college fees.
  • The remaining amount was paid through demand draft to the government college.
  • The complainant even received an email from the college, confirming his son’s admission under the Central Health Ministry quota, which allocates 280 seats for deserving candidates.
  • The accused took them to a professor at the college, who assured them that admission would be granted based on a Union Ministry letter.

However, no seat was allotted, and Dr. Ram later realized that he had been cheated.

The police are actively investigating the case and are expected to arrest the accused soon.
