Pune: A violent incident occurred at Bharati Hospital in Dhankawadi when the relatives of an 86-year-old deceased patient assaulted medical personnel and vandalized hospital property. Six individuals have been booked for assault and vandalism.
Incident Overview
The altercation took place on January 7 at around 12:30 a.m. The patient had been admitted to the hospital on December 29 with complications, including a low pulse rate and blockages. Despite being informed about the critical condition, the family decided to discharge the patient and transfer him to another hospital. The patient later passed away at home on December 30.
Angry over the death, six relatives, including three women, accused the hospital staff of negligence. They verbally abused and physically assaulted Dr. Ankita, the complainant, along with other staff and security personnel.
Vandalism at the Hospital
In addition to the assault, the relatives vandalized the hospital by lifting wooden stools and smashing glass panels in the electric room. This created chaos and panic, disrupting hospital operations and alarming other patients.
Police Intervention and Legal Action
The hospital authorities alerted the police, and senior officers, including Assistant Police Commissioner Rahul Aware and Inspector Dashrath Patil, arrived at the scene to restore order.
Dr. Ankita filed a formal complaint, and a case was registered under the Maharashtra Medical Services Act and other relevant sections. The police are investigating the matter to ensure appropriate legal action against the accused individuals.
