Family Chooses Organ Donation Amid Tragedy

New Delhi: Vandana Jain, a 32-year-old woman from Pitampura, Delhi, has donated her 5-month-old fetus to AIIMS Delhi for medical research and training purposes. The initiative was coordinated by her father-in-law, Suresh Jain, president of the Aagam Shri Foundation, which promotes organ donation awareness.

Suresh Jain said, “When our family experienced this tragedy, we decided to come forward and donate the fetus for a larger cause.”

Coordination with AIIMS and Volunteer Organisations

The family reached out to GP Tayal, North Head of the Dadichi Deh Dan Samiti, which connected them with AIIMS’ anatomy department. Volunteers and AIIMS officials coordinated to ensure a smooth process. An ambulance collected the fetus from a nursing home in Rohini, where Vandana had undergone the procedure.

AIIMS department head SB Ray issued the body donation certificate to the family.

Purpose of Fetus Donation

An AIIMS doctor explained that donated fetuses are used for medical research and training of students, helping advance anatomical understanding and surgical skills.

Recognition of the Family’s Contribution

Sudhir Gupta, Vice President of Dadichi Deh Dan Samiti, lauded the family, saying, “The Jain family showed that families can leave behind a legacy even during moments of grief and loss.”

The initiative highlights India’s growing focus on organ and tissue donation. In 2024, over 18,900 organ transplants were performed in India — the highest in a single year, according to Union Health Minister JP Nadda, speaking at the 15th Indian Organ Donation Day organised by NOTTO.
