Belonia : The Rajnagar Community Health Centre (CHC), once envisioned as a pillar of rural healthcare in Tripura’s Belonia sub-division, is now grappling with a critical crisis, marked by a severe doctor shortage, dwindling services, and increasing public frustration.
Established in 2001 to serve a population of over 10,000 people, the CHC was upgraded from a Primary Health Centre (PHC) to a CHC in 2020, expanding its scope. However, the infrastructure upgrade has not translated into better services, locals say.
Despite having 20 beds and basic facilities, the CHC suffers from the absence of regular doctors. Over the last two years, nearly 50 to 60 doctors have served here—none staying beyond a month. Locals allege that on most days, a doctor is available only for a few hours, either in the morning or evening, rarely both.
“It’s like a ghost hospital. We were promised better services, but today, the CHC is on the verge of collapse,” said a local resident.
Ripple Effects on Healthcare Access
The irregular availability of doctors has led to a sharp decline in patient footfall. No institutional deliveries have been reported in the last five to six months—a troubling development for a largely underprivileged, rural population.
Further compounding the crisis is the non-implementation of government health schemes, including Ayushman Bharat. Local medicine vendor Sudip Das, who provided supplies under the scheme, has reportedly not been paid, affecting his ability to continue services.
Even non-medical staff attendance is erratic. During a recent visit, hospital staff were found absent even after 10 AM, despite the presence of a biometric attendance system.
Community Demands Urgent Action
Locals are now demanding immediate government intervention. They have urged the health department to appoint permanent medical staff, ensure accountability, and improve service delivery under central schemes.
“This isn’t just about a hospital. It’s about basic dignity and access to healthcare,” a resident said.
With public trust eroding and essential health services crumbling, the future of Rajnagar CHC hangs in uncertainty—unless swift corrective measures are taken.
