Mangaluru: The Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) is set to establish a regional centre in Mangaluru, with the foundation stone scheduled to be laid by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday. The facility will be located on a one-acre plot near Mary Hill and will significantly enhance healthcare education and resources in the region.
Details of the Project
- Cost: The regional centre will be constructed at an estimated cost of ₹45 crore.
- Facilities: The centre will include state-of-the-art healthcare amenities, with plans to add a ₹25 crore simulation centre in the future.
- Timeline: The project is expected to be completed within two years.
Announcement and Vision
Dr. Shiva Sharan Shetty, an RGUHS syndicate member, announced the initiative, while Iftikar Ali, chairman of the Allied and Healthcare Council of Karnataka and RGUHS senate member, highlighted the efforts behind bringing the centre to Mangaluru. “The project will include advanced training facilities for medical undergraduates and postgraduates and will serve as a hub for academic and cultural activities,” Ali said.
Significance of the Regional Centre
The proposed regional centre is part of RGUHS’s ongoing efforts to decentralise operations and improve access to educational resources across Karnataka. It will also:
- Provide local administration and support for medical education.
- Facilitate digital evaluations and specialised training programs.
- Host cultural, academic, and sports activities for students.
Evolution of the Proposal
Initially proposed five years ago, the project has undergone revisions, including the removal of a swimming pool to focus on more essential healthcare and educational facilities.
Impact on Karnataka’s Healthcare Education
This regional centre joins several others established by RGUHS to cater to the diverse needs of healthcare education across the state. These centres aim to strengthen Karnataka’s medical education framework by offering enhanced resources and training opportunities closer to students’ locations.
The foundation stone ceremony marks a significant milestone for Mangaluru, further solidifying its role as an emerging hub for healthcare education and innovation.
