Pune — Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has taken serious note of the tragic death of Tanisha Bhise, a pregnant woman who was allegedly refused admission at Dinanath Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune. Following the incident, which has sparked public outrage, the CM has ordered the formation of an inquiry committee led by the Joint Commissioner of the Charitable Department, based in Pune.
The issue was brought to light by BJP MLC Amit Gorkhe, who claimed in a video message that the victim was his personal assistant’s wife. He alleged that she was denied admission due to her inability to pay an advance of Rs 10 lakh, and subsequently died after giving birth to twins at another hospital.
CMO Issues Statement on the Inquiry
A statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) confirmed that the inquiry committee would include key officials and medical experts to conduct a transparent and impartial investigation. The findings will help determine the exact sequence of events and whether any negligence occurred.
Hospital Denies Allegations, Cites High-Risk Pregnancy
In response, Dinanath Mangeshkar Hospital released an internal report dismissing the claim that the woman was refused treatment solely due to financial issues. According to the hospital, the woman was in the seventh month of a high-risk pregnancy involving twins and pre-existing conditions, and the expected treatment cost could range from Rs 10 to 20 lakh.
The report also states the family was advised to consider admission at a government hospital like Sassoon General if cost was a concern. A four-member hospital committee led by senior doctors, including Dr. Dhananjay Kelkar and Dr. Anuja Joshi, conducted this internal investigation.
Ajit Pawar, Bawankule Assure Action
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has assured swift and appropriate action. “If negligence or discrimination is found, those responsible will face legal consequences,” he said. He also confirmed that the District Magistrate of Pune has instructed the District Civil Surgeon to submit a detailed report within two days.
Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Maharashtra BJP chief, emphasized that both the CM and Deputy CM are treating the matter with utmost seriousness and have pledged accountability.
Public Reaction and Government Response
The incident has stirred public emotions and demands for hospital accountability and systemic reform in handling high-risk and emergency maternal cases. The government has urged citizens to remain calm and promised that justice will be served after a full investigation.
This case brings renewed focus on accessibility and affordability in private healthcare, especially in emergencies involving maternal and neonatal health.
