Police Take Action, College Withholds Internship Certificates

Rajkot: Bhavnagar police have detained six doctors accused of physically and mentally torturing three fellow students at Government Medical College, Bhavnagar. Authorities confirmed that formal arrests will follow soon.

Incident and Police Action

The detentions took place late Friday night. By Saturday, the college’s anti-ragging committee convened for the second time and unanimously decided to withhold the accused doctors’ internship certificates for two years.

On the night of March 6, the three medical interns were allegedly confined, assaulted, and subjected to mistreatment by their fellow doctors. Following the incident, two separate FIRs were registered at Nilambaug police station on March 9 under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including those related to kidnapping, wrongful confinement, causing hurt, and intimidation.

College Response and Preventive Measures

The accused and victims were completing their Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI) at Sir T Hospital and were residing in the college’s boys’ hostel.

During a meeting on Saturday, attended by parents of all involved students, college dean Sushil Jha described the incident as shocking. “Ragging cases usually involve first-year students, but in this instance, the victims had already completed 4.5 years of MBBS and finished their internship,” Jha noted.

To prevent future incidents, the college plans to implement stricter anti-ragging measures, increase hostel security, and conduct surprise faculty visits as part of a structured enforcement roadmap.
